“BAND TOGETHER” - Our Flagship Collaborative Songwriting Program
BAND TOGETHER Is a semester-long program for 3rd-12th grade students that teaches basic musical concepts while encouraging creativity, confidence and collaboration through the group creation of original songs. USING THE MIMA METHOD, STUDENTS PRODUCE THEIR OWN RHYTHMS, MELODIES AND LYRICS, stich these ideas INTO original compositions and create studio recordings, music videos and live performances of their work.
WE DELIVER BAND TOGETHER PROGRAMS IN COLLABORATION WITH SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY CENTERS, RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES, AND OTHER YOUTH-SERVICE PROVIDERS.
“ON THE SPOT” – an Exploration of Musical Improvisation
on the spot introduces young musicians who enjoy instrumental or vocal performance to different practices of musical improvisation and guides them to develop a shared musical language with which to hold their own improvisatory performances. Participants investigate how different elements of a performance affect the audience, interrogate their aesthetic preferences, and make collective decisions guided by the values underlying their creativity. Combining hand signals, foot stomps and other techniques, they create a method of conducting themselves in real-time.
WE on the spot PROGRAMS YEAR-ROUND AT THE MUSIC RESOURCE CENTER IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. WE ALSO PROVIDE THE PROGRAM ON-DEMAND WITH OUR HOST ORGANIZATIONS.
“MIMA REMIX” – Inside the Studio

They’ll write, record, edit, mix and master professional-quality, commercial tracks using studio hardware and software such as reaper, bandlab, ableton and protools. they’ll also learn strategies for group writing and composition in a studio environment.

MIMA CULTIVATES SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS
Collaboration:
Music harnesses many individual sonic ideas into a single, unified piece, and players must be willing to work together, without ego, for a greater good.
Confidence:
Playing music means making mistakes and overcoming obstacles. Musicians must be decisive, and quickly move on after every transient note of success or failure.
Creativity:
Music combines elements of precise structure and artistic freedom. Players must understand the musical language and then be willing to experiment with it, remaining flexible to solve problems and produce something beautiful.
Concentration:
Creating music as a group requires each player to carefully listen and respond to each new idea while keeping in harmony with the entire band.
Cultural Diversity:
In music, it is important to show respect for different players, traditions, rituals, opinions, styles, techniques, and art forms that all have inherent value to particular individuals or groups. We can all find common ground and learn something valuable from that which is seemingly different.
Constructive Criticism:
In analyzing and interpreting a piece of music, players must workshop the most and least successful aspects, giving and receiving honest yet sensitive feedback.
